VAT Calculator
Add VAT to a net amount, or back out the VAT from a VAT-inclusive price.
Add vs remove VAT
To add VAT, multiply the net price by the rate. To remove VAT from a gross price, divide by (1 + rate), not just subtract the percentage — a 20% VAT is 1/6 of the gross, not 20% of it. Common rates: UK 20%, most EU 19–25%, and many other countries 5–18%.
Frequently asked questions
Why isn't removing 20% VAT the same as subtracting 20%?
Because the 20% was added to the net, so it's a smaller share of the gross. £120 incl. 20% VAT is £100 net + £20 VAT — and £20 is only 16.7% of £120.
